Detour Method Online is now
The Detour
Movement Map
A four-month training that gives you the complete movement and mobility blueprint behind every pose, sequence, and transition you teach, so you stop guessing and start building classes your students can’t stop talking about.
You feel the pull toward functional movement, not because you want to replace asana but because you want to make the time your students spend on the mat relevant to how their bodies feel during the other twenty three hours of their day.
And yet…every time you try to weave what you’re learning in the wider movement world into the classes you already teach, something gets lost in translation.
Here is how teachers described where they were right before they found The Movement Map:
If any of those feel uncomfortably familiar, you are in exactly the right place.
Most yoga teachers are lacking a clear system for translating everything they intuitively know about movement into classes that consistently deliver results their students can feel in their bodies
The Detour Movement Map gives you that system.
By the end of four months you will have a complete movement and mobility framework you can stand behind with confidence, because you’ll understand the purpose behind every single choice, from the first pose to the final transition, and your students will feel the difference before you even have to explain it to them.
You don’t need more tools to be a better yoga teacher. You need a framework that puts those tools in motion.

What changes when you have a framework built on movement science rather than inherited sequences:
You reduce the repetitive strain injuries that can drive students away from yoga altogether, because you’ll know what’s causing them and how to address it before it becomes a problem.
You start teaching from evidence-based intentionality that makes every class feel like it was designed specifically for the bodies there, building the kind of unshakeable confidence that waitlists classes and sells out workshops.
You design progressive class sequences that meet students where they’re at while raising the bar of what they’re capable of, whether they're hypermobile beginners, desk-bound 9-5ers, or tight-hipped athletes.
There’s a version of your teaching where every single choice you make has a reason behind it.
These are the questions The Movement Map was built to answer:
Do our hips really need more opening, or have we been solving the wrong problem for decades?
Can you lead sun salutations without overloading the shoulders, but still include chaturanga or downward-facing dog?
How can you train spinal mobility in an all-levels class so that backbends consistently feel good for every single body in the room?
Is it possible to tackle arm balances and inversions in a way that leaves people empowered rather than intimated—regardless of the class level?
How do you get students genuinely excited about functional movement when what they signed up for was yoga?

“The course is totally different to any other Yoga course I have been a part of. Even if 'modern yoga' isn't your vibe, there are incredible nuggets of information that can be subtly applied to a more traditional approach so that students can move in a more sustainable way and find longevity in their practice.”
Madeleine Smith

“I also loved how rather than judging other approaches (which is something that happens WAY too often in the yoga community) you focused on sharing resources and information in a way that allowed participants to come to their own conclusions about what practices they feel will best support them (both as students + teachers). Thank you for putting this out there - obviously so much thought + hard work went into the program. And it SHOWS.”

“This course was a big part of what I needed to reboot my own practice and get back into teaching after 3 years of hurdles and injuries. I had the pieces before I learned of DMO but DMO helped me put the puzzle together so that it clicked.”

Your students are already looking for more than what conventional sequencing can give them. After four months inside The Movement Map, you will finally have the tools to deliver it.
The Movement Map 4-Module Framework
Module One: Foundations
Applying key components of the Detour approach to innovative yet accessible Sun Salutations.
From spinal articulation and proximal stability to scapular stability and ankle dorsiflexion, this module will have you seeing movement through an entirely new lens.
You’ll integrate everything covered in this module to create sun-salutations that feel less like a traditional obligation and more like a hot-bed for “ah-ha!” moments.
Module Two: Lower Body
Applying Lower Body Strength and Mobility to an Integrated Asana Practice.
If you love standing postures and never want to part with your forward bends, this is the module for you.
You’ll learn to break complex poses down into their component parts and design classes that keep students coming back for more.
Module Three: Upper Body
Applying Upper Body Strength and Mobility to an Integrated Asana Practice.
Learn to approach even the most intimidating postures with confidence and ease.
By the end of this module you’ll apply what you’ve learned to the art of sequencing, discovering endless possibilities for class planning.
Module Four: Floor Play
Rediscovering Your Practice from the Ground Up.
This module embraces play and unstructured movement—the perfect antidote to a practice constrained by routine.
By the end of this module you’ll have not only the skills but the inspiration to turn regular, ho-hum classes into unforgettable movement experiences.
Everything inside The Movement Map can be immediately applied to your classes:
16 self-paced video lessons you’ll want to watch on repeat so that your students experience “ah-ha” moments in every class
Weekly live coaching calls (Thursdays 12pm/3pm, alternating weeks) to keep momentum (and accountability) high
4 Rounds of Individualized Feedback so you never have to guess if you’re getting it right. Submit 4 practical assessments (one per module) and receive direct, personalized video/written feedback to verify if you’re on the right track.
Unlimited Access to the Detour Virtual Studio for the duration of the program so that you can see and feel the Movement Map approach applied in real life and gain structure and sequencing inspiration that can be adapted to your own classes.
Meet Cecily Milne:
Creator of Yoga Detour
I’m a recovered yoga addict whose chronic injuries drove me to rethink most of what I learned in teacher training.
I spent a decade learning from the top minds in the movement, strength, and rehabilitation worlds to build a methodology that bridges the gap between traditional yoga sequencing and modern movement science, not to replace what you already know but to give it a level of physical intelligence that changes what’s possible for every body in your room.
After sharing this approach from Ireland to Australia, Toronto to LA, I built an online training that’s helped over 500 yoga teachers turn conventional cookie-cutter classes into empowering movement experiences fueled by evidence-based practice and untethered creativity.
Built for teachers who are already busy being teachers.
The Movement Map is almost entirely self-paced, which means you move through the material on your schedule rather than someone else's. You never have to choose between this program and the classes you’re already teaching.
The only live element is our weekly coaching call (Thursdays at 12pm/3pm PT alternating weeks). While you’re not expected to be on the call every week, you should plan to attend at minimum once a month.
Your total weekly time commitment doesn’t have to exceed two hours. That time could be spent listening to a podcast from your prep resources, watching a video lesson, taking a class in the virtual studio, or submitting one of the four assignments required for course completion.
You have four months to complete all four modules and submit your assignments. That means even the busiest weeks will not derail your progress—there will be plenty of time to catch up.

“The Detour approach takes the emphasis off 'achieving' a pose and instead invites so much exploration and curiosity. It's more creative and I personally feel like I understand how to support structural integrity now instead of going into ranges of pain in my body. I'm excited to share this with my students.”

“This course will give you the freedom and the courage to explore yoga through curiosity and critical thinking. You will get the knowledge to prepare your body for poses which were scary for a long time or maybe classified as not good. You will learn how to approach them and create a sequence that can be adjusted to every level, and every BODY is welcome to participate. You will learn how to use your intra abdominal pressure and 360 breath which will make you fall in love with the breath again. The biggest surprise were the restorative yoga lessons. It was my first time I did those classes and was one of the missing pieces in my practice. The course is a perfect combination of playful movement and isolated movement, irradiation and rest. Questioning everything becomes a new habit.”
Tracey Fletcher

“Leaving the training I felt liberated from the strict guidelines of movement within the yoga sphere and I now sequence and cue with more attention to the intention of the movement/pose. Can’t wait to continue to learn and move with the Detour community!”

Want to be sure this is the right fit?
-
YES! We’ve designed this course with both students and teachers in mind. As a practitioner, you’ll benefit from the many lessons that focus on waking up different areas of the body, giving you new material to integrate into your normal practice or routine.
The checks for understanding along the way will help to ensure that you’re not just going through the motions – you’ll actually know WHY you’re doing things a certain way and how you can continue to progress through these movements in a way that is best for your body.
-
That’s going to depend on a) what you’re looking for and b) what you’ve already done. If you’ve been immersed in non-yoga trainings in the past and have already learned how to integrate mobility training, strength work and non-linear movement into your classes, then you likely already know much of what we’re offering here.
But if you’re still teaching largely from a 200HR and 300HR YTT foundation, then YES – you need this training. Even if you are somewhat familiar with the “other stuff” like FRC or PRI, this course will help you figure out how to weave everything together in a way that is authentic and informed.
-
We kick things off on September 21, 2026. Enrollment will stay open until the course is at capacity, at which point doors will close until 2027.
-
You have a four-month window to complete all four training modules and submit your work for feedback.
-
The Movement Map lives in the Detour Launchpad hosted on Circle. You can access it via desktop or through the Circle app, by logging into your profile.
-
No, we are consciously not affiliated with Yoga Alliance.
-
Yes, once you’ve completed all four modules and your assessments have been reviewed successfully, you will receive a digital certificate of participation.
Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.
-
Refunds are considered on a case-by-case basis in the event that injury or illness prevents you from continuing in the program. In most instances, an extension or future credit is applied to your account.
-
If you’re a self-employed yoga teacher/movement instructor/coach you should be able to expense the full cost of this course. We will provide you with an official sales receipt for your records.

"I've taken over 1000 hours of training and each time the teachers say that they're there for us and they fall short. Yoga Detour literally has filled all the missing links that traditional trainings have missed. Course content, delivery, authenticity and down to earth super rad instruction. Thanks YD. I'm a groupie for life."

"I've never felt like the yoga education I received prior to DMO equipped me with teaching skills, or gave me the knowledge to work with different bodies and skill levels. This programme has given me such a strong foundational toolkit to build classes and to adapt and personalize cues to the needs of my future students. The experience of being in the Yoga Detour community has given me overwhelming confidence and a belief that I can deliver truly great classes; something no other course either online or in person has ever achieved."

“This will be the best decision around continuous improvement and training you'll ever make. It will give you a wealth of tools and more importantly confidence in applying them in a way that makes your classes feel more purposeful, inclusive and fun. You will walk away feeling ready to teach on the fly to any group of students."”
